The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) will be observed in Panaji on December 1 in an event jointly organised by the NGO Sangath and Colorcon Asia Pvt Ltd, Verna in association with the GR Kare College of Law, Margao. The theme of the IDPD this year is in line with the UN Mission statement of ‘Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality.’
Addressing the media in the city on Monday, Percy Cardozo, Project Head, Sangath said that Sangath had been collaborating with the government department and civil society organisations to observe this day every year. The event this year is being held at the Sanskritik Bhavan at Patto between 10:30am-4:30pm on December 1.
According to Cardozo, the keynote address for the event would be delivered by Prof Amita Dhanda, senior professor at the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR), Hyderabad. The event would comprise of an inauguration function followed by a cultural programme by students of special schools – Lokvishvas Pratishthan Special School Ponda, Sanjay Centre for Special Education Porvorim, St. Xavier’s Academy, Gujarati Samaj School, Davorlim, Atmavishvas, Pednem, Atmavishwas Vocational Training Centre for Disabled, Verna, Cooj and Goa Association of the Deaf.
The morning session would also see an exhibition of artwork, celebrating the talents of persons with disabilities and a poster making competition for college students.
The afternoon session will see a panel discussion on the topic of ‘Moving towards an inclusive society, deconstructing the challenges in achieving the Agenda 2030 for Goa.’ and will conclude with two short plays, one each in Konkani and English put up by Abhivyaktee Productions, a renowned theatre group from Goa.
