The state government is yet to setup mechanism, to curb sale of Plaster of Paris Ganesh idols in Goa.
PoP idols are banned in Goa since 2008. Only clay idols are allowed as they do not contain toxic chemicals and dissolve in water fast.
In recent past, a task force comprising of officials from Environment Department, State Pollution Control Board, Excise, Commercial Tax Departments and police used to monitor import and sale of POP idols from neighboring states in Goa.
Ganesh Chaturthi festival would be celebrated from 2nd September this year. Over 3.5 lakh, Ganesh idols are worshiped by more than 7 lakh people across Goa during Chaturthi celebrations.
