The Bombay High court in Goa on Friday lambasts the state election commission for not applying mind independently while conducting the Zillia Panchayat elections in the state. Goa Panchayat Secretary, Sanjay Gihar, in extra ordinary notification postponing ZP polls said that that the entire election process up to the stage of campaigning will be valid and only the date of polling has been postponed to a date which will be notified by the Government subsequently, in consultation with State Election Commission
Earlier this day, while hearing a Public Interest Litigation, the Court has asked State Election Commissioner to apply his mind independently and reconsider to holding it on 24th March. The High Court directing SEC to file his reply on affidavit on Saturday has observed that prima facie it seems that ZP election has been postponed from 22nd to 24th on Goa government’s decision not SEC has not applied his mind independently. The High Court has fixed special hearing on this issue on Saturday.
Vasco based activist on Thursday had filed a PIL in Goa High court, plead postponement on ZP polls in Goa amidst Covid -19 outcry.
Meanwhile, the state government has announced that it has withdrawn notification declaring March 22 as paid holiday.
