NGT ACCEPTS SHARMA COMMITTEE REPORT ON PRIVATE FOREST. DIRECTS GOA GOVT TO NOTIFY 46.11 SQ KM LAND AS PRIVATE FOREST AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

National Green Tribunal in orders on Tuesday directed the Goa government to notify and make suitable entries in the Revenue records that 46.11 sq km land is private forest as soon as possible.

Pronouncing 24 page judgment, into a petition filed Goa foundation – the western zone bench of the National Green tribunal said that “41.20 sq km area demarcated by Forest Department and 4.91 sq km identified by the Sharma Committee totaling 46.11 sq km is confirmed and accepted as private forest”.

The NGT directed “The Chief Secretary of State Government of Goa is directed to notify the same and make suitable entries in the Revenue records in accordance with rules immediately as soon as possible.”

“We appreciate the efforts by Goa Foundation through its Secretary Dr. Claude Alvares and Ms. Norma Alvares, Learned Sr. Counsel for agitating the matter and finalizing it which was to be done by the State of Goa and by means of filing the application and contesting it at this stage has taken efforts to finalizing it which is a matter to be taken on record. In light of above facts the Goa Foundation should be paid the amount of fees paid while filing this application and also cost of litigation to be decided by the State of Goa and to be reasonably compensated. We leave it on the State of Goa to decide the amount of cost of litigation which should be accepted by the applicant without any contest”, NGT further said in its orders.
