“Physically stomping on the women is a tyrannical, despicable act. It violates human rights and is an assault on the dignity of women” : Bailancho Saad
The Goa based forum “Bailancho Saad” on Sunday demanded immediate suspension of police inspector Sagar Ekoskar for physically stomping on the women at the IIT protest site in Melaulim. Bailancho Saad also condemned the brutal violence unleashed on the peaceful protestors, mostly women of Mellaulim, who are demanding that the government stop grabbing their native lands for projects.
Sabina Martins, convener of the Bailancho Saad said that the act of state violence has been responsible for creating tension and vulnerable people left to defend themselves. Far from resolving the issue, it has resulted in more angst, trauma, economic and emotional distress, disrupting normal life.
she, further demanded that the government should revoke the process of acquiring land at Mellaulim for IIT, and look for alternatives, by following a participatory process of informed consent and in conformity with laws protecting rights of people and environment.
Martins said that the government should withdraw FIRs against protestors and stop witch hunting of activists and community leaders.
“It has become a trend at the police stations to lodge FIRs against women complainants and put them in jail on trumped up charges of abusing or obstructing police. No legal aid lawyers were provided and so have languished in jail for days. With no money for bail they have been further pushed into debt trap and exploitative conditions, thus victimizing victims”, Said Martins.
Last week, riots erupted amongst police officials and villagers protesting against setting up of permanent infra for Goa IIT at Melauli. Several activist who extended their support to villagers were booked with “Attempt to Murder” charges for attacking police officials.
