The Goa Association of Resident Doctors ( GARD ) on Thursday, warned the state government to withdraw their services to the COVID 19 patients in Goa following abusive behavior by relatives of patients admitted in the Government run COVID hospitals.
The press note issued by the GARD on Thursday said that “ In these terrible times of Covid-19 pandemic, we the resident doctors of GMC are putting our heart and soul to help the health services inorder to tackle the pandemic. From day one, we have been the cornerstone of COVID-19 management in the state of Goa, being posted in SGDH, Ponda hospital, ESI and basically wherever there were covid cases.”
“It saddens us immensely that even after giving our best efforts, while being crippled by lack of adequate facilities, oxygen supply, beds, manpower etc. we have been on the receiving end of multiple threats and violent incidents in the past. On 18/04/2021, the doctors on duty and the medical staff of ICU in SGDH, Madgaon were abused by the relatives after the demise of the patient. Similarly, on the 28/04/ 2021, another such violent incident has happened in GMC where the doctors and nurses were abused and a ventilator broken by the patient’s relatives. It is always the resident doctors who are at the receiving end of abuses for lack of beds and other facilities”, GARD said.
GARD further said “The people of goa need to understand that we have joined GMC as postgraduate students and are providing medical services as a part of learning. We too have parents and families back home just like you all who are waiting on the other side to see us all safe and are supporting us fearlessly to do our job of serving the public . And if the coronavirus wasn’t enough, we now have to face backlash from the very people we are trying to serve”.
“We would like to state to the people of Goa and the health authorities, if any further violent incident happens to any resident doctor or staff working in GMC/SGDH/ESI or any other covid hospital, we, the 300-odd doctors managing almost all the workload of covid-19 in the state, will have no other choice but to withdraw our services with immediate effect as the people and authorities have left us with no other choice. These violent incidents have already occured twice in a span of one week. We will not be giving any further notices or warnings before stopping our services. If the administration cannot provide security to the doctors or if the people of Goa fail to understand the situation and the plight of healthcare workers, then we won’t be responsible for any further untoward incidents happening as a result of withdrawal of our services”, doctors association said in its press release.
